Detox Diets: Do They Actually Work or Just Marketing Myths Essay

Detox Diets: Do They Actually Work or Just Marketing Myths Essay

Every year (and several times a year), numerous websites offer various detox services, from juice cleanses to specialized teas, which claim to remove toxins from the body, improve the workings of the digestive system and make you feel great. People, in large numbers, have already tried them, having suffered from overeating or simply wanting to take control of their health. Such a desire is understandable, but do these detoxes actually work?

Detox Diets: A Natural Built-in Detox System

While many people are quick to blame the toxins, what these companies do not say is that the body has its own set of detoxes that work every day, independent of any juice or tea. The most well-known detoxifiers are the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, and the digestive system. Each of them is responsible for removing a particular toxin from the body:

1. The liver filters alcohol and drugs, breaking them down into other substances that the body can eliminate.

2. The kidneys filter blood, removing waste and excess water.

3. The digestive system gets rid of waste.

4. The lungs expel carbon dioxide and other gases.

5. The skin gets rid of toxins through sweat.

Therefore, for the most part, all of the above-mentioned functions work regardless of the type of detox, which means that a person will feel much better after a few weeks due to changes in diet and a reduction in harmful habits. Therefore, when a company claims that its product is necessary for removing toxins, it is worth thinking about what else the liver and kidneys are responsible for.

What Does a Detox Actually Do?

People often lose weight rapidly on a strict detox diet — which is alluring to many. A decrease in weight can be explained by the fact that while on a diet, a person eats much less, especially carbohydrates. This leads to a decrease in water retention, which in turn causes a decrease in the overall weight of the body. This process is entirely natural but does not affect body fat. Moreover, this weight loss is temporary, since after a few days, water retention increases due to an increase in carbohydrate intake.

However, excluding alcohol and heavily processed foods from the diet for a few days does make a person feel better. Sometimes it becomes easier to control weight since the number of calories is reduced. Nevertheless, this is a short-term effect because most people return to their old habits after a few days.

What Companies Do Not Tell You About Detox Diets?

Unfortunately, most detox diets are extremely low in calories and protein, causing fatigue, irritability, and a decrease in performance. Moreover, some detox teas contain laxatives and diuretics, making a person lose too much fluid and disrupting the balance of electrolytes in the body. A sudden decrease in calorie intake interferes with the normal functioning of the endocrine system, since it cannot adapt to the new conditions. In addition, restrictive diets are not suitable for long-term use, while most companies suggest otherwise. As for returning to old habits after a diet, this is a normal process for most people, however, it may be difficult to do for some.

However, none of the above means that people who have decided to lose weight by sitting on a diet are wrong. Most often, people feel so tired of their condition that they want to do something serious to improve their health, and any diet will help them do that. The main advantage of such diets is the sense of victory over the body, which most people sorely need.

What Is the Best Way to Detox?

Unfortunately, the most effective way to detox is the most boring — a balanced diet, plenty of water, fruits, vegetables, and regular physical activity. Every day, the human body needs certain vitamins and minerals, which come from the food we eat. In addition, physical activity strengthens the body, and proper sleep, which most people lack, is essential. Unfortunately, these simple facts are not written on the wrappers of juice packs or on the brochures of diet companies. However, these measures are most beneficial to the body because they are natural. The liver and kidneys, which are responsible for detox, will be very grateful for the influx of vitamins and minerals.

In addition to the above rules, there are several basic foods that benefit the body and act preventively. For example, leafy greens, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, water, and herbal teas are useful for the body, strengthening the work of internal organs. Lean meats, fish, and eggs are also needed for the proper functioning of the body. However, it is not necessary to eat them in large quantities or follow the exact proportions. Most often, it is enough to eat them for dinner and alternate them with light meals and vegetables.

Thus, while such diets may not be very harmful, they are largely hyped up. The truth is that almost all diet companies greatly exaggerate the benefits of their products. However, for the most part, they are safe for the body and can be used several times a year. This will help the body get rid of accumulated toxins, but most of them simply need to be expelled naturally on their own.
