Do Galactagogues really work? What modern research tells us about milk supply

Do Galactagogues really work? What modern research tells us about milk supply

Have you ever wondered if, even after eating proper lactation foods or drinking bitter juice for good milk production, and despite taking expensive supplements or drinking some juice that is sold under the name of galactagogue and still don't get the results, still the milk production is still low, and your baby can’t feed properly? Insufficient milk production can lead to early breastfeeding termination. This can create issues for the infant’s growth and nutritional needs. Hence, it is necessary that there should be enough milk production for the infant’s nourishment and growth.

So here are some traditional galactagogues that might help you to produce a sufficient amount of milk.

Ginger :

This is one ingredient that is commonly found in everyone’s kitchen and also used in our day-to-day food dishes. It is a widely used and effective root herb. Ginger contains gingerols, which act as gentle vasodilators - meaning they widen blood vessels and improve blood flow. In the first 72 hours after birth, this surge in circulation to the breast tissue helps deliver the hormones and nutrients needed to bring milk in faster. Excellent for days one through three to help establish early volume, plus it settles an upset postpartum stomach. A mug of fresh, warm ginger tea in the morning works wonders on the body.

Shatavari root extract :

It is Ayurvedic postpartum care that holds up surprisingly well in modern labs. Shatavari contains natural plant compounds called steroidal saponins. These communicate with the pathways in your brain that control dopamine, effectively giving prolactin (the milk-making hormone) the green light to rise. Small clinical trials have documented noticeable increases in prolactin levels and healthy infant weight gain over a month of use. So shatavari might be helpful to you

Moringa :

It is a traditional plant. The leaves are packed with plant sterols, amino acids, calcium, and iron. When researchers gave moringa to mothers in the first few days after birth, milk volumes consistently doubled compared to those taking a placebo. Put fresh leaves into your dal, or mix a small spoon of dried powder into warm water or soups.

Aliv seeds :

Aliv seeds are also known as garden cress seeds or halim seeds; they not only help in milk production but are also an excellent source of iron. Aliv seeds are loaded with bioavailable iron, calcium, and folate. Postpartum, there is a decrease in the iron stores in the body, which leads to a decrease in milk production. It is highly effective. Make aliv seeds ladoo, or roast them, grind them, and sprinkle them on your vegetables, rotis, and dals.

Edible Gum :

Ever wonder why grandmothers insist on gond ke laddoo fried in ghee? It does not directly improve milk production, but it is energy-dense. It acts like energy fuel to your body when you are busy managing your postpartum life.

Fennel seeds :

Fennel contains anethole, an aromatic compound with mild estrogen-mimicking effects. While it has some slight influence on milk glands, its real superpower is carminative; it eases bloating, calms gut cramps, and relaxes smooth muscle tissue. So when your body is calm, milk production automatically increases. You can sip warm fennel water in the morning or have it in the afternoon.

So stay away from market/ store bought supplements. And use these traditional galactagogues, which have been used for years, even by your grandmothers.
