How to enjoy dining out without worrying about cholesterol: A practical guide for cholesterol management
On one weekend, your friends/family decided to dine out, but you have a fear in your mind about the increase in cholesterol in your body. You start thinking that dining out can be harmful or that it will ruin your entire healthy eating. All of these fears can lead to cancellations in the plan, and you will ruin your weekend and not diet. So here are some practical tips that you can follow while dining out with your family/friends.
First, remember that dining out once a month won’t increase your cholesterol. A rise in cholesterol or artery clogging from chronic inflammation takes years to form, so a single dine-out won’t make any difference.
When dining, always remember to opt for healthy dining-out options, for example;
Avoid excess deep-fried items and saturated fat items; instead, opt for grilled or tandoor items.
Avoid heavy buttery gravies like makhani gravy as they are loaded with saturated fat; instead, opt for tomato-based gravies with unbuttered roti or steamed rice.
Go for healthy starters like broths, vegetable soups, steamed dumplings, and tossed vegetables.
If ordering pizzas or pastas, always order a thin crust with loaded vegetables, and for pastas, instead of white or pink sauce pasta, opt for tomato-based sauce (Arrabbiata)
It is best to avoid alcohol or other any kind of sugary mocktails/cocktails; these might increase triglycerides. You can opt for lime water or buttermilk.
Always remember to start your meal with fiber like tossed vegetables or stir-fried vegetables and some protein like paneer, tofu, chicken, fish.
Always fill 50% of your plate with vegetables and protein.
While having dessert, divide 1 dessert among 4-5 people; this will ensure that you don’t eat any extra calories.
Post-meal, try to walk for at least 10 min.
You can have some warm water with fennel seeds to aid digestion.
Practice these tips for your next dine-out and enjoy your weekend with your family/friends.
