Stiff Mornings? What Your Bones and Joints Are Trying to Tell You
People in their 50s and 60s often complain about joint pain and pain when climbing stairs. Why does this happen? As you age, there is a gradual breakdown of the bones; bone density decreases, and inflammation occurs in some cases. A small fall can cause a bone fracture. Is there any solution? Yes, you can improve your bone health as well as prevent fractures.
But let’s first understand why it happens in a more detailed way :
Osteoarthritis: About 80% of the population over age 50 is affected. There is breakdown and inflammation that causes the pain
Less lubrication causes bone joint stiffness; as you age, the synovial fluid between bones decreases, which causes more friction in the bones.
Muscle weakness: when the muscles are weak, there is less support around joints that causes tightness.
Vitamin D and calcium deficiency: calcium is needed to support bone health; when levels go down, it increases the risk of fracture, and to absorb the calcium properly in the body, vitamin D is essential. Without a sufficient amount of vitamin D, calcium won't be absorbed in the body properly.
Excess Weight: When a person weighs more than their desirable body weight, it puts pressure on the bone joints. So having an ideal body weight is essential.
Inactivity: Many people don't move because of pain, but inactivity can make it worse.
Hormonal Changes: In post menopausal women, estrogen decreases, which increases the risk of osteoporosis.
What should be done to protect bone & Joint health:
Calcium and vitamin D
Include calcium-rich foods in your meals, like drumstick, sesame seeds, ragi, spinach, milk, and milk products, along with sunlight exposure for 15-30 minutes for vitamin D production. It is best to avoid harsh burns.
Omega-3 & anti-inflammatory foods:
To reduce inflammation in the joints, have walnuts, almonds, fatty fish, flaxseeds, and anti-inflammatory foods like warm ginger turmeric tea and colourful vegetables and citrus fruits.
Protein:
Protein is essential as it helps with wear and tear and muscle building, which will help in reducing joint stiffness. Have Eggs, fish, chicken, dal, pulses, legumes, paneer, tofu, soybean, milk, and milk products.
Maintaining Weight
Maintaining weight is essential as it helps in easing the pressure on the joints, so have a balanced plate, avoid processed foods, deep-fried foods, and sugary foods, and hydrate yourself properly.
Strength training
Weight lifting helps in strengthening muscles and also improves bone density. This is the must include your routine
Activity
Daily brisk walking for at least 30 minutes is important, as moving can ease muscle and joint stiffness.
