The 8-hour sit and sluggish gut: Tackling post-desk bloating
28 Oct 2026

You are eating a balanced meal at lunch, yet feeling bloated and heavy in your stomach; there could be many reasons, and one of them is sitting for 8 hours at work. It's about the biomechanics and movement that take place inside your stomach and intestines. And for this, just eating right would not solve it. For this, you need proper movement. Your question might be, I don’t have time for this? Okay, no problem. So, for this, there are some practical habits you need to develop at your workplace.
Sitting slumped increases the intra-abdominal pressure and stops your breathing muscles from moving properly, which creates high pressure around your stomach and intestines. Immobility impairs your peristalsis (natural movement - contraction and relaxation that moves the food and liquid in your GI tract) and delays gastric emptying (Gastric emptying is the controlled movement of contents from the stomach into the small intestine ). For these, doing the following might help with bloating or feeling heavy.
Limit or avoid raw cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, or raw salads like carrots, as they require more mechanical breakdown in the stomach. Choose boiled, well-cooked, or sautéed vegetables at lunch to reduce the gas.
Avoid sugar-free gums or protein bars which contains sorbitol/ maltitol, which can leave you bloated.
Avoid very high-fat meals at lunch, as high fat delays gastric emptying, which leads to meals sitting in the stomach for a longer time.
Avoid half a liter of water in one go, as this dilutes the digestive enzymes that are present in the stomach, so it is recommended to drink water sip by sip between intervals.
Five minutes of deep, conscious breathing using the diaphragm changes the nervous system from a sympathetic state to a parasympathetic state by stimulating the vagus nerve.
It is recommended to walk for 10-15 min after lunch; it stimulates movement inside the stomach.
Twisting the spine while sitting compresses and releases the abdominal organs to relieve abdominal tension, promote digestion, and prevent bloating.
Do follow the above guidelines so that you can feel light and less bloated post-work.
