Blood Orange & Ginger Kombucha Spritz

Blood Orange & Ginger Kombucha Spritz

Fizzy drinks are usually the first thing people cut back on, and the first thing they miss. This spritz retains the sparkle by using kombucha and sparkling water while fresh blood orange and ginger provide the flavour, so no added sugar is required. Nutritional Benefits Kombucha is a fermented tea that contains organic acids and, when unpasteurised, some live cultures. Blood orange supplies vitamin C and anthocyanins, the pigments behind its deep red colour. Ginger has long been used to settle the stomach and adds a warm bite that makes the drink feel complete without extra sweetness.

Ingredients

  • •120 ml plain, unsweetened kombucha, chilled
  • •1 blood orange (about 60 ml juice), plus 1 thin slice for the glass
  • •1 teaspoon fresh ginger juice
  • •1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • •60 ml chilled sparkling water
  • •Ice cubes, as needed

Method

  1. 1

Grate a small piece of ginger and press it through a fine strainer to collect one teaspoon of juice.

  2. 2

Squeeze the blood orange and strain out the seeds.

  3. 3

In a glass filled with ice, combine the orange juice, ginger juice and lemon juice.

  4. 4

Pour in the kombucha slowly, followed by the sparkling water, so the fizz remains intact.

  5. 5

Stir once, add the orange slice and serve chilled.

  6. 6

Note: Blood oranges are a winter fruit. When they are out of season a regular orange with a little extra lemon juice works well.

    Summary

  8. 8

The Blood Orange & Ginger Kombucha Spritz is a light fizzy drink of about 45 kcal that is ready in five minutes. It provides vitamin C from the fruit and a gentle digestive note from ginger. Kombucha contains small amounts of caffeine so anyone who is pregnant or has a sensitive gut should consult their dietitian before adding it to their routine.
