Pink Guava and Basil Seed Spritzer with Lime

Pink Guava and Basil Seed Spritzer with Lime

Introduction Guava or amrood is one of the most loved fruits in India, often eaten with a sprinkle of chaat masala and black salt. This spritzer transforms that familiar flavor into a cooling fizzy drink. Ripe pink guava is blended into a fragrant naturally sweet juice with no need for any sugar or syrup. Fresh lime juice adds brightness, a pinch of black salt and chaat masala provides it with a gentle street-style tang, and fresh basil leaves lift the aroma. Soaked basil seeds (sabja) float around through the glass like jelly pearls, and chilled sparkling water on top makes it light and bubbly. It is a refreshing summer drink that also makes a beautiful party mocktail. Nutritional Benefits: Guava is an excellent source of vitamin C and also provides fiber and potassium, and pink guava gets its color from lycopene, a natural plant pigment. Lime adds more vitamin C and a fresh tang. Basil seeds are rich in fiber and are traditionally used in India to cool the body in hot weather. Using sparkling water instead of soda or syrup keeps the drink free of added sugar.

Ingredients

  • •2 medium ripe pink guavas (~200 g), chopped
  • •1/2 cup water, for blending
  • •1 tbsp basil seeds (sabja)
  • •1/2 cup water, for soaking the seeds
  • •2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • •6-8 fresh basil leaves
  • •1/4 tsp chaat masala
  • •Pinch of black salt
  • •1 1/2 cups chilled unsweetened sparkling water
  • •Ice cubes
  • •Lime slices, for garnish

Method

  1. 1

Soak the basil seeds in 1/2 cup water for 15 minutes until they swell and turn translucent with a jelly-like coating.

  2. 2

Wash and chop the guavas, keeping the skin on. Blend with 1/2 cup water until smooth, then strain through a fine sieve, pressing well, to remove the hard seeds. Chill the juice.

  3. 3

Stir the lime juice, chaat masala, and black salt into the guava juice. Taste and adjust.

  4. 4

Lightly crush the basil leaves in 2 tall glasses. Add the soaked basil seeds and fill with ice.

  5. 5

Pour the guava mixture over the ice and top with chilled sparkling water.

  6. 6

Stir gently, garnish with a lime slice and a basil leaf, and serve immediately while it is fizzy.
